A "big-time small-time" pitcher once upon a time (big stuff in small leagues) until my elbow blew up, I was fascinated by Jordan's stab at minor-league ball, scored a contract and looked forward to following him around the Southern League, tracking his relationship with professional curveballs. Michael's unwillingness engage produced a different book than I'd imagined: less about MJ vs. professional pitching, more about the insane MJ industry, not all of it pretty.
I did have a lovely summer tooling around tooling around Alabama (MJ played for the Birmingham Barons), Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee.
Rookie: When Michael Jordan Came to the Minor Leagues (Addison-Wesley,
1994): “Not merely the most insightful book about Michael Jordan that has yet
been written, it’s very nearly the only insightful book on Michael Jordan that’s
ever been written.” ---New York Observer
"A portrait of Jordan unlike any we have seen to date and as fine a study of sports and fame in America that we will see this, or any, season."---San Francisco Review of Books
